2012 Masters Style Review

April 11, 2012

Zip Drive The modern polo shirt often has a zip collar instead of buttons, as in this well-fitted beige one worn Sunday by Phil Mickelson. It went perfectly with his ecru trousers, tan belt and tan shoes.

Onetime leader Peter Hanson of Sweden also adopted a zipped, modern look while tying Mickelson and others for third.

Vested Interest Australian Geoff Ogilvy, who tied for 19th, wore a short-sleeve golf shirt with a sweater vest -- kind of a nerdy look -- on day two of the Masters. With the new mustache, you found yourself wondering: Is it really him?

Bo-Dacious In carding a final round 64, Bo Van Pelt donned a rather intense golf shirt -- shocking pink with a carnation pink collar. Hard to look at in the sun, but cut him some slack -- it was Easter Sunday.

Plaid Play The man who made the golf course safe for plaid, Ian Poulter, was up to his usual color-matching tricks, this time melding gray with touches of yellow form head to toe. He was in good form finishing seventh.

Bro-Hug Style Points For Sergio Garcia and Rory McIlroy, it was a commendable display of manly affection at the all-male Augusta National, but a) they held it too long; b) they nuzzled a bit much; and c) matching one's shoes and shirt, as a rule, is suspect.

Fab Freddie Fred Couples seems to do it every year -- contending, at times even leading, at the Masters. He does it with that easy swing and even easier, ageless sense of style.

Green Day Effortlessness is Louis Oosthuizen's signature, both the swing and the look. For the final day he wore a forest green golf shirt and drapey ivory pleated trousers -- a perfect look for the green jacket. But it was not to be.

Bubba Gumption Masters Champion Bubba Watson wore white clothing with pink diamond detailing and matching belt throughout the tournament, to promote the charity Fresh Start, which provides reconstructive surgery for children. (The shirt and belt can be purchased online at travismathew.com). It turned out pink and green (as in jacket) went very nicely together.
