Bret Wahl, Senior
Director of R&D/Irons:
"One challenge that we
face in irons is to bring
our core technologies
to smaller, Tour-inspired designs.
Based on Tour feedback, we're
asked to refine the r7 TP to
include a thinner topline, less
offset and a more functional sole.
Yet we still have to incorporate
features such as an undercut
back cavity, 'inverted cone'
technology and a thinner face to
provide higher MOI and optimum
CG properties to deliver the flight, distance
control and feel that high-caliber players
demand. Irons with a thin face and large
unsupported face area [indicated by a deep
undercut cavity] can have feel issues. Tour
Preferred incorporates a sound-managing
cavity badge to ensure forged-like feel."
How it works: The cast stainless steel
head has an "inverted cone" behind the
hitting area for more consistent output on
misses (because even skilled players don't
always catch the center of the face). The
thin topline, shorter blade and reduced
offset mean more workability than r7 TP.
The undercut cavity spreads more weight
to the heel and toe than in r7 TP.
