Tiger at Torrey: it's a date.
The world's No. 1-ranked player confirmed Monday that he'll open his 2014 season on January 23 at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines.
And why not? Woods, the defending champ, has won the San Diego event seven times. He also captured the U.S. Open when it was held at Torrey in 2008, notching his 14th major, a number he's been stuck on ever since.
San Diego native son Phil Mickelson is also slated to tee it up at Torrey, but not before a stop in Abu Dhabi for the HSBC Championship, where Lefty will compete Jan. 16-19.
Woods will also touch down in the Middle East this month for the Dubai Desert Classic, which kicks off Jan. 30. Newly engaged Rory McIroy will join Tiger in that field.
