Fred Couples, captain of the 2009 U.S. Presidents Cup team, will make two picks to fill out his roster on Sept. 8. We at Golf.com would like to start a grass-roots movement to get Tom Watson on the team. Dear Captain Fred Couples,
We the fans of golf hereby petition for the selection of Tom Watson to the 2009 United States Presidents Cup Team.
A decade older than you, sir, a decade older than the oldest Presidents (or Ryder) Cupper ever, 12 years older than Presidents Cup chairman Barack Obama, 45 years older than the Presidents Cup itself, Watson, turning 60 this September, might be considered too old to make the team.
But we, the fans of golf, find his constitution to be self-evident. His gap-toothed smile dismissed the muscled likes of Tiger Woods, Camilo Villegas, and Vijay Singh at this year's Open Championship. Playing at San Francisco's Harding Park — which is shorter than Turnberry — this Stanford alumnus has the wit and the age-defying chutzpah, not to mention the heart of a champion, to help lead your American Team to victory and inspire all generations of golfers everywhere.
Yes, Watson played his last Ryder Cup 20 years ago and captained a victorious Ryder Cup team way back in 1993, but we believe he would provide the U.S. team with something that transcends age, experience and winning percentages. If Michelle Wie (she of zero career wins) can play for the Solheim Cup team, surely Tom Watson (he of 39 career wins, eight majors and another 12 titles on the Champions Tour) can rightly represent his country at the Presidents Cup.
We believe Watson reaffirms that golf is still the game of a lifetime. During these trying times, he is the rugged, pruned individual combating the most meritorious and unforgiving game ever devised. As you surely know, Watson willed into existence the third-best Ryder Cup winning percentage at 10-4-1, and, as he recently proved, the guy can still play. No one deserves more to represent us in the 2009 Presidents Cup matches, and no player would help his team and the game more.
