Bob Rosburg, the winner of the 1959 PGA Championship who later made a name for himself as a roving analyst on ABC's golf telecasts, has learned he has cancer in his lymph nodes and his liver, he said Thursday.
"I started losing a lot of weight and didn't feel real good," he said. "The doctor was worried and we did a biopsy. The prognosis isn't bad. They think they can get it in remission, but right now it's really knocked the wind out of me. It's hard to put one foot in front of the other."
Rosburg, 81, won a half-dozen tournaments on the PGA Tour from 1954 to 1972, and had two runner-up finishes in the U.S. Open. He went 2-0 for the 1959 Ryder Cup team.
He found out about the cancer six weeks ago and has just finished his first round of chemotherapy. After a month off, he will have more treatments.
"I'm going to be O.K.," he said from his home in La Quinta, Calif. "I probably won't be playing anymore, but I played long enough."
