SINGAPORE (AP) — Lam Chih Bing was among five golfers to qualify for the British Open, becoming only the second golfer from Singapore to qualify for the only major outside of the United States.
Lam, who has had a poor season on the Asian Tour, was joined by Australia's Adam Groom, David Gleeson and Lee Won-joon, and Scotland's Ross Bain in regional qualifiers Wednesday.
The 36-hole final Asian qualifying, played at the Sentosa Golf Club Tuesday and Wednesday, was restricted to just 70 players.
Groom topped qualifying with a two-day 9-under 135 from scores of 66 and 69, with Lam, Gleeson and Bain a shot back. On a lightning-interrupted final day, Lee birdied the par-four 1st hole in a playoff with Park Jun-won - who parred - to claim the last slot.
The Open will be played at Carnoustie, Scotland from July 19-22. Mardan Mamat was the first Singaporean to play at the Open in 1997 and 2005.
