Begin with the Salmon Scramble at Mother's Bistro (mothersbistro.com) downtown, where they have great coffee, a Portland trademark. Then head to Pumpkin Ridge's Ghost Creek course (pumpkinridge.com). It's long and challenging, and I love the solitude and quiet. Take a minor detour as you head back into town to the Rock Creek Tavern (mcmenamins.com), where you can sample some of the McMenamin Brothers' great local microbrews. Near downtown, a Robert Trent Jones Jr. municipal course, The Great Blue at Heron Lakes (heronlakesgolf.com), is as good as a muni gets-and it starts at $25 for 18 holes. Veritable Quandary (veritablequandary.com) downtown is great for post-golf food and drinks.
