How to Stop Slicing Your Irons

This trick even works with the long ones

This story is for you if...

• You slice your irons...
• ...especially the longer ones in your bag
• You frequently slice your driver, too

The Problem

The less loft on the club, the more you slice it.

Why It's Happening

Your downswing approaches the ball from outside the target line and cuts across it. You can often get away with this with short irons, but as the shafts get longer and the loft decreases, you have problems.

The Quick Solution

Here's a quick fix that will stop a run of slices during your round: As you take the club back, turn your shoulders and hips away from the target. While you might have been told to keep your hips stable to build torque, that's what's causing you to swing too steeply. And sometimes you get so caught up with impact that you forget this very basic but critical move.

Notice how turning both your upper and lower body instantly moves your club deeper behind you with basically the same arm motion. From here it's much easier to approach the ball from the inside and keep slices at bay.
