The problem You sometimes hit putts scruffy catching the clubhead on the green behind the ball and sometimes hit the top half of the ball with a glancing, upward blow.
Solution To stabilize your putting stroke, use these two keys.
Start by setting your elbows correctly. They should be bent at a 45-degree angle to your biceps, and set just an inch or so away from your hips. This elbow positioning will automatically create the proper angles between your shoulders and biceps (almost 90 degrees) and your wrists and your hands (45 degrees).
Check your stance width. With your elbows correctly bent, the middle of each foot should be located directly below the point of each elbow. This will create a square, stable putting platform from your shoulders all the way down to your feet.
