How to Stop Missing the Sweet Spot

Practice cross-handed to groove solid contact

This story is for you if...
• You suddenly start spraying shots
• Your impact feels mushy
• You have no clue what the problem is

The Situation

You thought you had your swing grooved, but a rash of poor shots prove otherwise.

The Solution

Using a 7-iron on the practice tee, switch the position of your hands on the grip (left below right) and swing cross-handed. It will feel awkward at first, but if you stick with it you'll ingrain the following swing keys that are difficult to perfect using a normal grip.

Needed Hinge — Since your right hand is on top, your right wrist will hinge sooner in your backswing and establish an extra lever for power.

Proper Arm Positioning — The cross-handed grip forces your right arm to follow the lead of your left—it will fold correctly as your left arm remains straight.

The Power Approach — You'll also feel a bent right elbow and extended left arm deep into your downswing—both are vital for ball compression and power.
