The deal: You follow a push hook with a pull slice. Your inconsistent ballstriking is the result of never getting your club on the correct plane. For most golfers, this has been a difficult thing to gauge—until now.

The test: Grip a mid-iron in just your left hand and, with your right hand, hold a second mid-iron by its hosel. Take your normal address and position the grip of the club in your right hand about six inches behind the clubhead of the one in your left. Swing both clubs slowly to the top, doing your best to keep them exactly six inches apart all the way.

The check: If both of the shafts feel light in your hands and are still parallel (use a mirror or elicit the eye of a helpful friend), you found the correct plane—ingrain that feel. If you make the common mistake of swinging too much around your back rather than up around your shoulders (below the correct plane), gravity will cause one or both clubs to feel heavy as they hang behind your back.
