It takes courage to play high-flying, soft-landing touch shots around the green, because you have to make a fairly big swing to generate enough speed and height to make the ball stop quickly. To lose that fear, find an area of moderate greenside rough and try a simple grip adjustment.

Slide both hands up the handle until the last two fingers of your left hand are completely off the grip. You'll feel the majority of pressure in your right thumb and index finger. Go ahead and take a healthy swing—with your left hand weakened, the clubhead will pass the hands through impact, adding loft. The ball will shoot straight up the face, producing plenty of backspin and height.
