Hole 3
Par 3
U.S. Open Yardage: 142/195
Rees Jones on how it changed: "We moved the green 30 to 40 yards to the left, to bring the canyon into play, and added 25 yards to the hole. We also added a saving bunker along the left-front of the green. The hole will play two different lengths. With a hard-to-access front pin, the tee will be up. When the pin is in back, the canyon in back will come into play."
Peter Kostis on the primary challenges to the players: "Club selection and shot trajectory are critical. Make your mistakes to the middle of the green do not short-side yourselfbecause the kikuyu-grass rough, whether they let it grow or shave it down, will cause all kinds of problems on recovery shots."
Bottom line: Torrey's "wow" hole for pure scenery will bite hard when the wind starts to blow.
