Michelle Wie: Missing in Action
Since 2004, Michelle Wie has competed against the men of the PGA Tour at the Sony Open thanks to a sponsor's exemption. But last week Wie, a freshman at Stanford, was not in the field, and she will not play any PGA Tour events in 2008. Her absence in Honolulu highlighted her transition from a phenom to a controversial young player struggling with her game.
Before she was a household name, Wie appeared in the Aug. 13, 2001, edition of Sports Illustrated's Faces in the Crowd. Earlier that year, the 11-year-old had become the youngest winner of the Jennie K. Wilson Invitational, Hawaii's most prestigious women's amateur tournament.
