BACKSWING

Do... Keep your torso in place as you swing back, and turn your upper body away from the target just enough to make your left shoulder even with the ball. Hinge your wrists early and completely. That's what gives you a steep swing.
Don't... Take the club away low like you do with your driver. That delays your wrist hinge and ruins your timing.
