3. THE MOUNTING PRESSURE
The front nine at Carnoustie is no pushover, but the back nine is a bruising stretch of holes that punishes you physically, mentally and emotionally, and gets progressively tougher. You just hang on for dear life and hope your score doesn't blow up in your face. Four brutal par 4s can play more than 450 yards, and the 245-yard par-3 16th can play 260 when the pin's back. And when you're playing that hole downwind—yes, there's the wind again—it's virtually impossible to get your ball to check.
