2. THE ROUGH
Rough—knee-high rough, especially is not typically a defense found on links courses. At the 1999 Open at Carnoustie, it was the defense. Carnoustie's rough is primarily fescue, but because of heavy rain in the run-up to the 1999 Open, there was also a heavier, denser grass at the base of the fescue wisps, a potent mix that played like a jungle and left the players begging for mercy.
