According to the U.S. Open Media Guide, Cabrera grew up two blocks away from fellow European Tour player Eduardo Romero in Cordoba, Argentina. After Cabrera failed to earn his European Tour card three-straight times, Romero paid Cabrera's expenses in 1995 so he could continue to practice and compete.
