The Best Ball For You

It's your right as a golfer to complain about how hard the game is. But the truth is that most of us make the game much more difficult than it needs to be by not taking the time to make certain our equipment fits us as though it were a bespoke suit.

Instead, we show up at the first tee wearing a potato sack — a putter that's too long, a driver with the wrong flex or loft, irons with the wrong lie — and then tee up a ball we found in the woods a few weeks ago. And it's the ball — the focus of the entire game — that probably receives the least consideration.

That's a bit of a shock when you consider that in a poll of Golf Magazine's Top 100 Teachers, we discovered that, based on their observations, half of us play the wrong ball.

Using the links at left, we will help you determine which ball you should be playing by considering what makes them tick: which fly the farthest, spin the most and feel the softest.

We commissioned Golf Labs, an independent test facility in San Diego, Calif., to run extensive robot tests on 54 ball models. The robot struck shots using a driver, an 8-iron and a sand wedge, while a state-of-the-art launch monitor recorded carry distance, total distance (carry plus roll), spin rate, ball speed, launch angle and more.

Our research partner, Hot Stix Golf, analyzed all the data and determined cover hardness using an industry-standard measurement device. In the end, we make recommendations for your game according to your ability, swing speed, tendencies and preferences.
