Spectacular views, fabulous conditions and great golf are just a short drive from the DC beltway and Northern Virginia in the shadows of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Located just 1.5 miles north of I-66 in Front Royal, Virginia, Blue Ridge Shadows Golf Club is a must play for DC and Baltimore area golf enthusiasts. Designer Tom Clark took what God created and crafted a masterpiece, leaving the terrain seemingly untouched. The routing takes advantage of some of the most beautiful scenery on the east coast - the Shenandoah Valley. Holes meander through hardwood forests, split fairways, double greens, elevation changes and a 60 foot waterfall! Superintendent Vince DiStefano, formerly of Shadow Creek in Las Vegas, promises the condition of the bentgrass tees, greens and fairways will provide tour-caliber playing surfaces. We all know how confining it is to be restricted to cart paths, and even though the course is brand new, turf conditions permit carts on the fairways every day, except in rare circumstances. In fact, everything at Blue Ridge Shadows is geared toward creating an enjoyable visit for golfers of all abilities. A practice range with multiple grass tees, large putting green and a chipping/bunker practice area will allow you the opportunity to get your game in shape for what’s to come.

The first hole really sets the tone for the course. Set atop a small knoll, your view of Skyline Drive might distract you from the task at hand - choosing which part of the split fairway to aim for. (We'll give you a hint - it's not the one on your left) The downhill second shot must find the green instead of the perfectly placed pond located left of the green. As you make your way around the front nine, you'll hit a variety of shots. Hole 2 is a short par-4 which plays uphill and into the prevailing northwest wind. Three is a downhill par 3 leading into a long par 5 on hole 4 forcing you to navigate woods and fairway bunkers. Holes 5 through 8 are literally carved through the hardwoods, but nothing looks contrived. One of the favorites on the front nine is hole 7, a gentle dogleg left par-4 to an elevated green with a tricky false front. The finishing hole on the front is a long dogleg left promising certain peril if you stray too far to the right off the tee.

Moving onto 10 calls to mind natural drama. The 100 foot drop in elevation makes the two water hazards that flank the hole seem so close that you can reach out and touch them. Once your tee shot finds the fairway, you can breathe a little easier, although just for a short while. Water comes into play on the infamous par-5 eleventh, with its diabolical 'saddle' green, the dogleg right 12th and the short but beautiful par-4 thirteenth. You'll remember 13, not because of superstition, but because of the second shot that golfers must navigate over Crooked Run, the creek fronting the green to land safely in front of the 60 foot waterfall behind the green. The view from that tee encompassing the waterfall, clubhouse and mountains is truly memorable. Fourteen is a devilish par-3 with 15 featuring another dramatic downhill tee shot to the 120 yard long double green. The par-3 16th hole is a beast, with water to the right and behind the green. Seventeen is a long, dogleg left par 4 with the par 5 eighteen completing your journey through a split fairway and green nestled between Crooked Run, trees and bunkers.

After the round, tally scores and settle wagers in the Shadows Grill. The wrap-around deck provides excellent vistas from every seat in the house. PGA Professional Mike Ahrnsbrak and his staff will welcome you with great service and warm smiles. Whether you are in for one round or playing in a golf outing, rest assured that the staff at Blue Ridge Shadows is sure to make your visit memorable.

And wait, there's more. As if the fabulous golf course isn't enough, early next year the Blue Ridge Shadows development will open a Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites, full service spa, conference center and Houlihan’s Restaurant. Operated by Hospitality Hotel Group in Harrisonburg, Virginia, the final product will offer the Mid-Atlantic Region a destination for spectacular golf, excellent lodging, amenities and trademark Hospitality Hotel Group service. Capping it all off is a residential development featuring single family town homes developed by DR Horton.

In all, the vision of owners Rick Magalis and John Hopkins can be enjoyed by many. One thing is for sure, this course won't be standing in anyone's shadow. It's that good! With 5 sets of tees from 4,909 -7,340 yards, Blue Ridge Shadows is enjoyable and challenging for the novice golfer, the more seasoned amateur as well as professional players. It's a Mid-Atlantic golfer's delight. For more information visit blueridgeshadows.com or call 866.631.9661.
