Nick Faldo famously won his first British Open at Muirfield in 1987 by making 18 straight pars in the final round, but even at his peak Faldo would struggle to repeat that feat on his new course in the sand dunes of Central Kansas, thanks to a combination of blind shots, rippled fairways, 70 bunkers and diabolically contoured greens. But even if the Great Plains gusts reach Wizard of Oz levels, the generous landing areas and ground-game entrances to the greens allow creative players to thrive while the rest of us can bunt around happily. Cottonwood Hills rivals its celebrated neighbor, Prairie Dunes, as a strong, varied test. And with a peak fee of $55, it is heaven in the heartland.
