In Scandinavian mythology, Valhalla was a great hall where the souls of Vikings feasted and celebrated with the gods. In Kentucky, Valhalla is one of the most challenging golf courses in the area.
Dwight Gahm, a Louisville business leader and golf lover, dreamed of making a facility worthy of major championships. The course Jack Nicklaus designed is the perfect venue. After opening in 1986, Valhalla was the site of the 1996 PGA Championship (won by Mark Brooks in a playoff over local favorite Kenny Perry) and the 2000 PGA Championship (won by Tiger Woods over Bob May in a playoff). The course was also the site for the 2008 Ryder Cup.
The first nine holes wander through a low-lying parkland area. Many of the greens feature several tiers, which puts a premium on accurate approach shots. Fittingly, the primary rough is Kentucky bluegrass with high fescue growing as the second cut.
The back nine plays over the highest parts of the property, where tall trees come into play and a creek wanders over four holes.
The tournament-play course record is a seven-under-par 65, shot by Russ Cochran in the third round of the 1996 PGA Championship.
