Course Spy: We-Ko-Pa

We go undercover to see if you're overpaying

SERVICE
The staff is helpful and polite, without being overbearing, and their attentiveness begins as soon as you pop the trunk. And kudos to the cart girl, who dispensed extra ice without our overheated group having to ask for it.

PACE OF PLAY
This counts as a desert oasis for pace of play: We teed off at 11 on a beautiful fall Saturday and buzzed around in 4 hours and 3 minutes. Wide fairways and little distance between greens and tees add up to a quick round.

QUALITY
Though it lacks the drama of some Phoenix-area courses — including its sister course, the Cholla — this low-profile layout still engages at every turn, thanks to great views, the variety of strategic options and easy walkability.

VALUE
$85 for a September weekend morning is a great price for a fine course free of homes and roads. Conditions weren't firm enough to take advantage of the contouring, but that was because overseeding was to begin the next week.

VERDICT
Even at $210 in peak season, the Saguaro Course should make your list of courses worth pursuing. It challenges better players without bludgeoning hackers, and that's not always easy to achieve in the desert.
