Troy Merritt’s three-shot victory Sunday at the Quicken Loans National was the first for the 29-year-old from Iowa and the second of the year for Wilson Staff’s FG Tour V4 irons.
Merritt, a Wilson Staff player, finished T3 in greens in regulation percentage en route to victory at Robert Trent Jones GC in Gainesville, Va., hitting 58 of 72 greens for 80.55%. He led the field in approach shot distance to the hole with an average of about 22’, and during Saturday’s third round, Merritt hit 10 of his approach shots within 10 feet of the hole. That led to a 10-under 61 that left him tied for the 54-hole lead with Kevin Chappell.
Merritt plays two FG Tour V4 utility irons (Nos. 2 and 4) with Aldila ATX hybrid shafts. His FG Tour V4 irons are 5-PW with KBS CTaper 125 shafts. Padraig Harrington won the Honda Classic in March with the Wilson Staff FG Tour V4 irons.
Other than the Wilson Staff irons, hybrids and wedges, Merritt plays quite the mixed bag of clubs. Check it out below.
