WILSON STAFF FG TOUR F5 DRIVER

CATEGORY: Better Player Drivers
PRICE: $380
WE TESTED: 9° (adjusts 8° to 11°) and 10.5° (adjusts 9.5° to 12.5°) with Mitsubishi Fubuki Z 50 shaft
KEY TECHNOLOGIES: The interchangeable sole weight screw -- which comes in 3, 7 or 11 grams -- helps alter backspin.

PROS

DISTANCE: The FG Tour F5 delivers yardages off the tee that are similar to those achieved with testers' regular weapons; adequate distance, for the most part, but it can drop a few bombs if you nail the center of the face; misses travel reasonably far, even those struck low on the face.
ACCURACY/FORGIVENESS: This driver is a straight-shooter that will help get you in the short grass; low spin rates minimize dispersion surprisingly well.
FEEL: The head has a weighty sensation throughout the swing; soft pop at impact that's quiet yet satisfying to some testers; the ball seems to jump off the clubface with ample speed.
PLAYABILITY: Produces a higher trajectory than expected from a deep-faced club; repeatable ball flight -- medium high and pretty darn straight; draws and fades can be shaped gently but big movement isn't so easy.
LOOK: An attractive clubhead without a lot of distracting graphics; sits nice and square behind the ball and is easy to aim; shiny black paint job is one of Wilson's best in some time.

CONS

Dependable, but not a standout in any category; muted impact feel isn't as rewarding as some testers would like; panelists want more big-time distance.

BOTTOM LINE: The F5 offers solid distance and acceptable forgiveness in a handsome package.

HOT STIX'S TAKE: The Wilson Staff FG Tour F5 driver has a lower-spinning head for low- to mid-handicappers with a deep face to improve misses high and low on the face. The swingweight screw gives more opportunity to customize the build. Launch: Low-Mid; Spin: Low-Mid

MORE INFO ON THE WILSON STAFF FG TOUR F5

From GOLF.com, October 5, 2015:

The new 460cc FG Tour F5 driver (available in 9- and 10.5-degree lofts) features a 6-way adjustable hosel that can be set from 8-degrees to 12.5-degrees in half-degree increments. The adjustable hosel can be adjusted without removing the clubhead for added convenience. A movable weight in the bottom of the clubhead allows players to choose from three weight options to further fine-tune spin rate and launch characteristics for optimum carry distance and trajectory.

Other features of the FG Tour F5 driver include a lightweight crown that creates a lower and deeper CG location and variable face thickness for improved ballspeed across the entire hitting area. -- Michael Chwasky
