PROS

PLAYABILITY: A tremendous number of grinds—there’s a wedge for every occasion; with the right setup, these babies can handle any shot you order up, and the menu’s huge; thumps through sand and tears the ball out of the darkest corners of your course.
DISTANCE CONTROL: Dial-a-distance—the SM5 has testers hitting pins (and sinking tap-ins); the club is totally obedient on chip shots; predictable hop-and-stop spin—amp it up or scrub some off at will; squeezes out a few extra yards if the situation demands.
FEEL: Testers agree that it’s super soft but never mushy, responsive but rarely rude; feedback is as instructive as a club can provide; the SM5 wedge is beautifully weighted—heavy enough to stand up to anything without feeling like a runaway train.
LOOK: You almost don’t want to get them dirty; Titleist keeps it clean and classy, with a simple teardrop shape and a slightly curved leading edge that nestles under the ball—whether they’re set open, square or shut, they look lethal.

CONS

It’s tough to keep up with the variety of grinds and the company’s alphabet-soup labeling system—fitting is hugely important, or you could wind up in the wrong stick; the SM5 doesn’t cover up all mistakes, and it doesn’t apologize for it—these are best left to players already confident in their short game.

BOTTOM LINE: The undisputed champion of the test keeps the belt for another year. The SM5’s are across-the-board winners, with impressive results in every category. To our testers, there’s Vokey, and then everyone else.
