ClubTest 2014: Titleist Scotty Cameron Select Newport 2 Putter
Titleist Scotty Cameron Select Newport 2
Category: Blade Putters
WE TESTED: 34”, 35” shaft lengths
KEY TECHNOLOGIES: Deep, milled grooves produce a soft sound and feel, while heel-toe weights add balance and stability.
DISTANCE CONTROL: Tops in the test; outstanding control even when impact varies; a real pleasure on lag putts; great feedback makes it easy to gauge speed and distance.
FEEL: A buttery soft feel, but it’s substantial enough to put a great roll on the ball; testers enjoy the feel as the ball leaves the clubface; the milled face gives consistent feedback throughout the length of the blade; no surprises at impact; balanced weighting improves tempo and leads to a solid response.
LOOK: The benchmark by which all others are measured—gorgeous, sophisticated look; a classic, clean blade with a lovely satin finish; simple, effective black sight line on the flange.
The stock grip leaves something to be desired— some guys find it too thin and/or slippery; one or two testers comment that off-center hits don’t react quite as well as they’d like and tend to come up short; a handful of testers wonder how big the improvements are over previous models.
BOTTOM LINE: The top blade tested. Elegant in its simplicity, which leads to effortless putting. Great balance, lovely feedback, a consistent roll and a big enough sweet spot for most players.
