ClubTest 2014: Titleist Scotty Cameron Futura X Putter
Titleist Scotty Cameron Futura X
Category: High-MOI Mallet Putters
WE TESTED: 35”, 35” shaft lengths
KEY TECHNOLOGIES: A rear balance bar moves extra mass away from the ball to boost stability, while sole weights closer to the face improve feel and forgiveness.
DISTANCE CONTROL: Best in class; easy to dial in and remarkably intuitive for its size; putts roll out and hold the line off nearly the entire face; exceptional precision for a club this big.
FEEL: One of the top-rated; a face-balanced putter that syncs up well with straight-back-straight-through strokes; lightweight for the amount of metal in there but supremely stable, with easy, natural acceleration; firm, energetic response is consistent across the whole face.
LOOK: Techie, with some top-dollar touches; testers liked the glare-proof gunmetal finish and red accents; easy for most guys to aim, since the design curves work well with the central alignment bar to draw the eyes forward.
To some testers, it looks too big and bugeyed; extreme stability cuts down a bit of the feedback for a few guys; one or two testers find that putts come off the face hot—it takes touch to navigate downhillers or fast greens.
BOTTOM LINE: One of the best models tested. The Futura X makes short work of long putts, topping the high-MOI mallet category in distance control and not lagging far behind in feel. There’s no denying it’s a gimme genie.
