ClubTest 2013: TaylorMade RocketBallz Stage 2 Tour Fairway Woods
TaylorMade RocketBallz Stage 2 Tour Fairway Woods
Category: Better-Player Fairway Woods
WE TESTED: 3 (14.5°; +/- 1.5°), 3HL (16.5°; +/- 1.5°) with Matrix RocketFuel 70 graphite
KEY TECHNOLOGIES: A “Speed Pocket” behind the face promotes more flex for longer shots. High-strength Carpenter steel is used to create a thinner, faster clubface, while a lower, more forward CG location reduces spin. The sleeve allows loft adjustments of +/- 1.5°.
PLAYABILITY: Its greatest strength; provides a relatively low ball flight that can be worked in both directions with relative ease; 16.5° HL is very good from fairway and trouble lies; great for cheating the wind.
DISTANCE: Some testers claim "near driver distance" off the tee; very good from the fairway on solidly struck shots; toe and heel hits don’t seem to suffer much distance penalty.
ACCURACY/FORGIVENESS: Shots hold their line very well, even in the wind; slight mis-hits stay under control much of the time.
FEEL: Very little twisting or bad vibration at impact; nice sense of propulsion off the clubface without being jarring or overly loud.
LOOK: Fairly traditional shape sets up well both on the tee and fairway; low profile clubface and rounded head are well liked by most guys.
Not a ton of feedback on off-center hits; decal on crown is not a favorite of many testers; some guys expect even more distance than they got.
BOTTOM LINE: Balanced overall performance highlighted by notably good playability in a unique-looking package.
