ClubTest 2016: TaylorMade PSi Irons
TAYLORMADE PSi IRONS
CATEGORY: Better Player Irons
PRICE: $1,100, steel; $1,300, graphite
WE TESTED: 4–PW with KBS Tour C-Taper 105 steel shafts
KEY TECHNOLOGIES: A 360° undercut channel generates more consistent carry distances.
PLAYABILITY: Shots soar and land softly, and even the long irons fly like hybrid shots; gentle draws and fades are easy to play, but balls generally want to go straight; especially skillful at navigating rough.
ACCURACY/FORGIVENESS: Overall forgiveness is its greatest attribute -- to some guys, the entire face seems like one big sweet spot; even marginal swings lead to a good number of birdie putts; shot-to-shot consistency is a breeze.
DISTANCE CONTROL: Explosive power without any surprises; longer than what several testers have in their bags; three-quarter shots are simple to control when finesse is needed.
FEEL: Well-balanced, with a sense of the head's location throughout the swing; some feedback comes in the form of vibration at impact; the PSi is a joy to play around the greens.
LOOK: Seems more refined than the RSi, with a smaller head that appeals to better players; face slots near the toe and heel on the long irons aid alignment and inspire confidence in hot results; curved soles look ready to handle any lie.
Smaller head still looks stockier than some to a few testers; overall feel doesn't seem consistent throughout the set -- the long irons play harder than the short ones; not the most maneuverable clubs in the pack.
BOTTOM LINE: The PSi offers an attractive blend of powerful long irons and precise short irons for anyone entering the Better Player iron category.
