TAYLORMADE OS MONTE CARLO

CATEGORY: Midsize Mallet Putters
PRICE: $200; $250 (CB version)
WE TESTED: 34", 35", 36", and 38" lengths
KEY TECHNOLOGIES: The raised red-and-white alignment aid adds to the club's forgiving nature.

PROS

DISTANCE CONTROL: The large head and forgiving insert immediately put a good roll on the ball for consistent results; excels on off-center hits -- putts have minimal distance loss.
FEEL: Well-balanced putter delivers a stable feel throughout the stroke; face insert absorbs impact -- the ball disappears on the sweet spot, while off-center strikes produce just minor sensations to the hands; straight-back, straight-through strokes see best results with the counterbalance (CB) version.
LOOK: Testers enjoy the simple design and brushed-silver finish; raised red and white alignment stripes along the flange jump out at address and help players aim along the intended path; big footprint advertises forgiveness.

CONS

Similar feedback on all contact -- it can leave you guessing as to the quality of your stroke; simply too big to fit some testers' eyes; high-shine paint job can be a problem on sunny days.

BOTTOM LINE: A midsize model that's just a hair away from the high-MOI category, and the size pays off: You get big-mallet stability and forgiveness. Also, the 38” CB version is a great belly putter replacement.
