TAYLORMADE M1

CATEGORY: Better Player Fairway Woods
PRICE: $300
WE TESTED: 3 (adjusts 13° to 17°), 3HL (adjusts 15° to 19°), 5 (adjusts 17° to 21°) with Fujikura Pro 70 graphite shaft
KEY TECHNOLOGIES: Two 15- gram sliding weights in the sole allow for a customizable flight.

PROS

PLAYABILITY: Shot-shaping possibilities galore -- the various weight settings provide lots of options for directional control.
ACCURACY/FORGIVENESS: Reasonably tight dispersion -- testers can get away with most misses; as expected, it's noticeably more forgiving off the heel and toe when the sole weights are split to the perimeter of the head.
DISTANCE: The M1 is a monster off the tee -- shots launch high and seem to stay in the air forever; doesn't require much effort to get good length; so-so contact travels pretty well.
FEEL: Silky smooth, well-balanced sensation throughout the swing; nice and crisp on solid shots; misses won't shock your hands but will let you know how you hit it.
LOOK: Overall appearance says hi-tech; black-and-white crown helps testers set up square at address; compact, pear-shaped clubhead makes guys feel like they're gonna crush it.

CONS

A few panelists want more meaningful feedback; not quite as forgiving as some would like; one or two testers want more length from the fairway.

BOTTOM LINE: One of the best fairway woods in the test. The highly adjustable M1 offers top-notch distance (especially on tee shots) and workability with a decent amount of built-in help.
