With his victory at the Wells Fargo Championship Sunday in Charlotte, Rory McIlroy has now won twice in his last three starts on the PGA Tour. Arguably more impressive is that he won each event in very different ways.
McIlroy’s WGC-Cadillac Match Play win came on the strength of a hot putter, whereas at Quail Hollow last week McIlroy finished near the top of the field in every major ball striking category.
The season-long leader in total driving on the PGA Tour, McIlroy finished first in driving distance and T2 in total driving at the Wells Fargo Championship. The last three drivers that the 26-year-old hit Sunday flew 329, 364 and 348 yards, respectively.
McIlroy also ranked T2 in GIR percentage at 77.8% and third in approach shot distance to the hole. The combination of lengthy tee shots and precise approaches helped McIlroy lead the field in strokes gained/tee-to-green.
Rory’s driver is a Nike Vapor Pro with 8.5° of loft and an MRC Diamana S+ 70 TX shaft. He averaged 321 yards off the tee at Quail Hollow.
McIlroy’s irons are Nike VR Pro Blades in the 4-9 iron.
