ClubTest 2015: Ping G30 Driver

On The Range: Ping G30 Driver
ClubTester Jack Record talks about one of his favorite drivers at ClubTest 2015, the Ping G30.

Ping G30 Driver

Category: Game-Improvement Drivers
Price: $349
WE TESTED:
9° (adjusts 8° to 10°), 10.5° (adjusts 9.5° to 11.5°) with TFC419 graphite shaft
KEY TECHNOLOGIES: The CG is lower and farther back than in the G25 driver.

PROS

DISTANCE: A true workhorse—among the leaders; lower spin plus a smidgen more speed means most guys get a good boost over the fan-favorite G25; top-shelf consistency.
ACCURACY/FORGIVENESS: Head of the class, close to can’t-miss; a fairway finder with an uncanny ability to cover flaws and save your lazy swings; shots struck almost anywhere on the face elevate and go.
FEEL: Produces a concentrated pop, with a bright, metallic bang at impact; easy to swing—the high-balance-point shaft offers an excellent sense of lag and load into the ball.
PLAYABILITY: Muscular, mid-to-high ball flight makes for booming hang time, with no trace of ballooning; some slight bending is in play, but it’s mostly a straight-shooter; easy enough to vary trajectory as needed.
LOOK: Holy turbulator, Batman! Modern, aggressive look with a strong gothic tinge; clawlike fins on the crown help to frame the ball and focus your eyes at address; big points for the matte finish.

CONS

A small minority of testers find the feel to be too thin and the clubhead too light; some panelists consider the G30 driver to be more tweakable than full-on adjustable.

BOTTOM LINE:The G30 is one of the best drivers in the test. It’s an all-around monster with chart-topping forgiveness. Long, lenient and suitable for almost every swing, Ping manages to improve upon an all-star.

HOT STIX'S TAKE: A mid-launch head with relatively low spin. The G30 is one of the most forgiving models on hits all across the face, which makes it suitable for all skill levels. Launch - Mid; Spin - Low
