PING G HYBRID
CATEGORY: Game Improvement Hybrids
WE TESTED: 2 (17°), 3 (19°), 4 (22°), 5 (26°), 6 (30°) with Alta 70 graphite shaft
KEY TECHNOLOGIES: A high-friction face coating leads to lowerspinning shots.
PLAYABILITY: Expect shots to get up quickly with a medium-high trajectory and come down softly; best from the fairway and tee when going for a straight line of attack, but gentle draws and fades are doable.
ACCURACY/FORGIVENESS: Here's where the G truly excels— extremely accurate off the tee, keeps a tight shot dispersion and masks misses directionally and distance-wise; expect nothing worse than a minor push or pull.
DISTANCE: Longer than average, but its calling card is reliability and soft landings; good length on less than ideal contact; an excellent replacement for long irons.
FEEL: Nicely weighted during the swing; firm, ironlike click on good hits; misses aren't jarring, but there's just enough feedback to let you know you erred.
LOOK: No distractions from this glare-free head; turbulators and white scoring lines help square the face; neutral head sets up nicely and gives you confidence that shot shaping is possible.
Not a ton of help in the rough; for a few guys, it's solid but not spectacular in any one area.
BOTTOM LINE: One of the top Game Improvement hybrids. The G serves up smooth stability, good distance and a high degree of forgiveness and accuracy for mid-handicappers and up who want to target hunt.
