ClubTest 2014: Odyssey Versa Jailbird Putter
Odyssey Versa Jailbird
Category: Midsize Mallet Putters
WE TESTED: 35” shaft length
KEY TECHNOLOGIES: An updated black-and-white “Versa” alignment pattern highlights the face angle at address and during the stroke.
DISTANCE CONTROL: Top-notch on shorter putts because of easy alignment; lightweight head requires a bit of a learning curve on longer ones.
FEEL: Quiet, soft and solid on nearly all contact; balanced weighting keeps the head on line without twisting, almost as if it’s locked onto a track; gets more comfortable and easier to dial-in distances with practice.
LOOK: A zebra in a box, or maybe a convict on a stick—jokes aside, the bold black and white stripes, combined with three simple dots behind the ball, help testers line up putts and keep the head on line for a straight-back-and-through stroke; the head is larger than most mid-mallets.
Not everyone can get past the bold stripes— some testers find them more distracting than helpful; for a handful of guys, it takes plenty of practice to get proper distances on longer putts.
BOTTOM LINE: While its look wins a few fans right out of the box, the results are even more persuasive. Best for straight-back-straight-through swings, the Versa Jailbird’s weighting, balance and distinctive visuals lead to a fluid, controlled stroke for many testers.
