Nike VR_S Covert Tour Hybrid
Category: Better-Player Hybrids
Price: $229
WE TESTED: 3 (19°; +/- 2°) with Mitsubishi Rayon Kuro Kage Silver 80 graphite shaft
KEY TECHNOLOGIES: The sole cavity increases MOI by repositioning mass toward the toe and heel. Its adjustable “FlexLoft” hosel lets players choose from five loft options and three face angles (1.5° closed, neutral or 1.5° open).
PROS
PLAYABILITY: A mid/low hitter that allows for gentle draws and fades; the clubhead cuts through rough with ease; adjustability feature is helpful.
ACCURACY/FORGIVENESS: Manages mis-hits well by controlling sidespin and delivering good distance on less-than-perfect swings.
DISTANCE: The club's best attribute -- respectable length, and predictable yardages.
FEEL: Head remains stable through the ball; club loads nicely on the downswing.
LOOK: Very distinct looking; pear-shape head and elongated face look clean and comforting at address; candy apple red finish grows on some testers.
CONS
Solid, if unspectacular, results; some testers are turned off by the look of a cratered sole; a few guys prefer a more articulate feel in a hybrid.
BOTTOM LINE: A dependable trouble club with a glitzy, love/hate appearance.
