ClubTest 2013: Nike VR_S Covert Tour Fairway Woods
Nike VR_S Covert Tour Fairway Woods
Category: Better-Player Fairway Woods
WE TESTED: 3 (15°; +/- 2°) with Mitsubishi Rayon Kuro Kage Silver 70 graphite shaft
KEY TECHNOLOGIES: The cavity-back design positions more mass toward the perimeter of the head for a higher MOI and help on mis-hits. Variable face thicknesses increase ball speed over a larger area of the face.
PLAYABILITY: Its strongest attribute; one of the most workable sticks; excellent from the rough, cuts through all types of turf with ease; repeating flight but guys can curve it either way on demand.
DISTANCE: Long and strong, lots of zoom off the clubface -- a powerful club that goes longer than what some guys are used to.
ACCURACY/FORGIVENESS: One of the best in the test; it wants to go straight whether or not you hit it well; plenty of sidespin reduction on mis-hits.
FEEL: Heavy and substantial all the way through impact; somewhat firm face produces oomph at contact.
LOOK: Bright red paint job looks snazzy but tasteful to most testers; solid shape looks good sitting next to the ball and is easy to align.
A big swoosh on the crown is definitely not a favorite among testers; shaft feels too stout in regard to flex rating and produces a slightly lower trajectory than some guys prefer.
BOTTOM LINE: Provides a really nice combination of shotmaking ability, accuracy and ample distance.
