Nike VR_S Covert Fairway Woods
Category: Game-Improvement Fairway Woods
WE TESTED: 3 (15°) with Mitsubishi Rayon Kuro Kage graphite shaft
KEY TECHNOLOGIES: The cavity-back design redistributes more weight to the club's perimeter. The clubface has a 45 percent larger “hot zone” than last year's VR... S to boost ball speeds on the lower half.
PLAYABILITY: Typical shot pattern is straight to a slight draw; stronger swingers report a soft, high ball flight, whereas slower swingers experience a slightly lower, more penetrating flight.
ACCURACY/FORGIVENESS: Takes very little effort to hit it straight -- smooth swings are rewarded with laserlike accuracy; shots that do stray off-line won't run into a ditch.
DISTANCE: Consistent with many others in its class on center hits; above-average distance off the tee.
FEEL: Heavy head is easy to follow throughout the swing and delivers a crushing blow to the ball; typical feedback with the Covert is a distinct thud on center hits.
LOOK: Fire engine red head looks clean and powerful and does a good job of hiding the large hole on the sole.
A few testers struggle with the 3-wood's performance from heavy lies; some guys find it less workable than other fairway woods; several testers don't care for the cavity look.
BOTTOM LINE: A solid choice for golfers seeking more accuracy, forgiveness and help with getting shots in the air.
