ClubTest 2014: Nike VR_S Covert 2.0 Tour Driver
Nike VR_S Covert 2.0 Tour Driver
Category: Tour Drivers
WE TESTED: 9.5°, 10.5° with Mitsubishi Rayon Kuro Kage 60 graphite shaft
KEY TECHNOLOGIES: Cavity-back design helps to transfer more energy to the ball at impact. Adjustable hosel lets you select from five lofts and three face angles. Slightly higher launch and spin than last year’s VR_S Covert Tour driver.
DISTANCE: One of the longest drivers in the test; this stick delivers big, towering bombs once it’s dialed in.
ACCURACY/FORGIVENESS: Repeatably accurate on good hits; it does a nice job of retaining distance on slight mis-hits; produces less sidespin than expected on most types of contact.
FEEL: Big improvement over past models—a great sound through the ball; powerful and solid; the entire head seems to be engaged in the strike as the ball shoots off the face.
PLAYABILITY: Mid- to high-trajectory flight with consistent launch angle; wants to go straight but can be worked in either direction with the proper swing; fairly easy to turn over and draw.
LOOK: Square setup and nice proportions mean confidence at address; bold red paint and bright red grip combo is pleasing to many guys.
Some moderate swing speed testers don’t get as much height and distance as they’d like; sole cavity and swoosh on crown look funny to some guys.
BOTTOM LINE: One of the top drivers in its class. Aggressive swingers are rewarded with longer drives.
HOT STIX'S TAKE: Launch - Low; Spin - Low
