Nike VR X3X Wedges
WE TESTED: “Toe Sweep” in 56°/10°, 60°/10° with True Temper Dynamic Gold steel shaft; “Dual Wide” in 56°/8°, 60°/8° with True Temper Dynamic Gold steel shaft
KEY TECHNOLOGIES: Toe sweep has a wide sole near the toe and a narrow sole width at the heel to get the ball out of bunkers and rough.
PLAYABILITY: One of the highest-rated clubs; easy to open up and add loft when needed; can easily get the ball out of the toughest bunker lies; functional around the green and in the fairway; in general, the Toe Sweep model (pictured) performs better around the greens, while the Dual Wide is stronger on full swings.
DISTANCE CONTROL: One of the best; delivers time after time; remarkably consistent on full swings from the fairway; a snap to dial in from around the green; reliable—few unpredictable results from the sand or trouble lies.
FEEL: Well-struck chips and pitches deliver positive feedback to the hands; evenly distributed, well-balanced weighting throughout the swing; nothing in the way of harshness, even on mis-hits.
LOOK: The Dual Wide has a classic, refined look that makes you proud to have it in your hands— compact head tells you that it’s a player’s club all the way; Toe Sweep has a modern-looking sole.
Toe Sweep looks and plays a little bulky for some guys; not quite as soft as the best of the group; not a tremendous amount of help on mis-hits.
BOTTOM LINE: One of the top-rated models. The VR X3X heads are strong, dependable performers that provide a lovely mix of playability and distance control.
