Ping Tour Wedges
WE TESTED: Standard sole (SS) in 47°/12°, 50°/12°, 52°/13°, 54°/13°, 56°/13°, 58°/10°, 60°/10° with Ping CFS steel shaft; Thin sole (TS) in 58°/6°, 60°/6° with Ping CFS steel shaft; Wide sole (WS) in 54°/13°, 56°/13°, 58°/10°, 60°/11° with Ping CFS steel shaft
KEY TECHNOLOGIES: "Gorge" grooves are designed to increase spin and produce a lower launch relative to Ping's Tour S. Bounce options include a standard sole, a thin sole for sweeping swings or firm turf, and a wide sole for steeper swings.
PLAYABILITY: Testers can be creative and produce a variety of shots, including flops, since the leading edge stays down; the wide sole works better from soft, fluffy lies while the thin sole is preferred from firmer lies.
DISTANCE CONTROL: Consistent lengths; easy to gauge distances on full or half shots.
FEEL: Good feedback in terms of impact location; small cavity and elastomer insert cushion feel on all but the worst contact.
LOOK: Attractive dark, non-glare, smoky finish makes it easy to frame the ball; slightly larger heads than expected.
Good feel but just short of the softness and smoothness of some other wedges; cavity looks a little busy and the black plastic piece detracts from the overall look; a few testers believe it concedes a couple yards.
BOTTOM LINE: A reliable wedge that performs all the necessary shots with relative ease.
