ClubTest 2013: Nike VR Forged Wedges
Nike VR Forged Wedges
WE TESTED: 56°/ 8°, 56°/14°, 56°/16° with True Temper Dynamic Gold steel shaft
KEY TECHNOLOGIES: "X3X" grooves have aggressive edges and deep channels for improved stopping power and control. The forged carbon steel head comes in a satin chrome or black oxide finish.
PLAYABILITY: The VR Forged makes chipping or pitching a simple act; no problems from the fairway if you're a decent ballstriker; sole design is terrific in the sand.
DISTANCE CONTROL: Very easy to hit the same yardage time after time; predictable on solid shots -- you get what you deserve.
FEEL: Solid contact provides a "click" sound and the soft sensation you expect from a forged clubhead; off-center strikes aren't overly harsh; good weighting, not as heavy as some others.
LOOK: Clean, traditional head frames the ball nicely from all types of lies; teardrop shape is easy on the eyes; aggressive-looking clubface makes you think you can really spin it.
Some testers struggle a bit from tight lies; not a lot of extra help from the VR Forged on mis-hits; a few guys prefer a slightly softer feel from a forged club.
BOTTOM LINE: An attractive, traditionally shaped forged wedge that provides balanced all-around performance with a pleasing feel.
