Cleveland 588 RTX Wedges
WE TESTED: 52° (loft)/10° (bounce), 56°/14°, 60°/12° with True Temper Dynamic Gold steel shaft
KEY TECHNOLOGIES: The "S sole" is wider at the heel than the toe to improve bunker play without sacrificing playability elsewhere. Large U-grooves are supplemented with rough, laser-milled scoring lines and a directionally milled "Rotex" face pattern to maximize spin.
PLAYABILITY: Good sticks around the greens; effortlessly digs the ball out of tough lies; easy to open up the blade for delicate lobs.
DISTANCE CONTROL: Very precise on chips and pitches; able to consistently generate a lot of check on short shots, while spin on longer ones remains easily controllable.
FEEL: Not quite as soft as some forgings, but delivers a lively, rewarding hit at impact; very good weight and balance -- heavier than most, and easy to track throughout the swing.
LOOK: Receives top marks; handsome, traditional shape; black finish [not pictured] adds flair and frames the ball beautifully.
For a few testers, it's somewhat difficult to control out of the sand; too much dig for steeper swingers; black finish with microgrooves looks great but can wear quickly.
BOTTOM LINE: A great-looking addition to the 588 line. It's worth a try for players who already prefer Cleveland due to dependable feel and playability.
