ClubTest 2014: Cobra Bio Cell Driver
Cobra Bio Cell Driver
Category: Game-Improvement Drivers
WE TESTED: 9.5°, 10.5° with Project X PXV graphite shaft
KEY TECHNOLOGIES: A light crown and face contribute to a lower CG, faster ball speeds and less spin. Eight settings allow you to change loft between 9° and 12°. Draw bias helps to tame left-to-right sidespin. Higher loft options than in the Bio Cell+.
DISTANCE: Overall, the Bio Cell is one of the longer clubs in the Game-Improvement category; there’s a serious hammer behind the bright head colors (red, blue, black, orange, silver).
ACCURACY/FORGIVENESS: It’s quite accurate and very forgiving; holds a tight dispersion, mis-hits only go slightly off line.
FEEL: The Bio Cell is nicely weighted with satisfying feedback to the hands and ears; a crisp, compressed smack at impact with a little bit of softness to it.
PLAYABILITY: A versatile performer that offers different settings for different swings; sends shots on a nice, high flight; a bunch of testers say the Bio Cell can deliver anything from a high draw to a low fade, which is rare for a game-improvement driver.
LOOK: Colorful yet still serious at address; the choice of head colors gives a sense that golf should be fun; Cobra’s alignment logo and white marks on the face help to frame the sweet spot.
A few testers hit it shorter than their own; a handful of guys tend to lose it to the right; a minority of testers hit it too low, even after making adjustments.
BOTTOM LINE: One of the highest-rated drivers. It’s near the top in all categories.
