KEY TECHNOLOGIES: “Rotex” face milling combines with 16 percent larger grooves to increase spin, especially when the face is laid open.
PLAYABILITY: A true player’s wedge that lets you manufacture all types of shots from the fairway and around the green; very good from tight lies, hard sand, and uneven spots in the fairway; capable of just about any flop or pitch shot in the book.
DISTANCE CONTROL: The 588 RTX is predictable on full and half-shots; testers know how much spin it’ll produce and where shots will stop; soft landings and little sidespin make it easy to dial in for most guys.
FEEL: A wonderful combination of solid, concentrated contact and a soft, forged-like impact sensation; some added vibration will let you know when you’ve missed it.
LOOK: Beautiful player’s shape that anyone would be proud to display in his bag; classic, clean, and even a little old-school; provides all the confidence and familiarity of the old 588s with a really sharp finish.
Not a ton of game-improvement capability for less accomplished players; a few testers would prefer a softer feel than this one has to offer; some guys say it’s not the best option from more difficult bunker lies.
BOTTOM LINE: The 588 RTX wedge is a traditional-looking design that’s a delight to play around the green.
