Callaway X2 Hot Hybrids
Category: Game-Improvement Hybrids
WE TESTED: 3H (19°) with Callaway Ultralite graphite shaft
KEY TECHNOLOGIES: Added mass low and forward generates a flatter ball flight. The forged Carpenter 455 steel face cup boosts ball speeds for more length.
PLAYABILITY: Best in the test; a penetrating flight that runs hard once on the ground; sole weighting provides the mass necessary to cut through thick rough and resist twisting.
ACCURACY/FORGIVENESS: Scores top marks; very accurate and forgiving— extremely easy to hit and almost impossible to mess up; makes poor shots acceptable and some good shots great.
DISTANCE: Shots take off with a lot of energy; a small handful of testers get seriously long distance, while most find these match up well with their current clubs.
FEEL: Testers experience a firm, muscular jump off the sweet spot; plenty of clubhead feel throughout the swing; good feedback at impact.
LOOK: Big enough to let you know there’s forgiveness and power available, but small enough to dig through difficult lies; chevron on the crown makes for easy alignment.
A few testers find that it offers limited shot-shaping capabilities; some graphics on the shaft and head don’t resonate with all the guys; impact sensation doesn’t agree with everyone.
BOTTOM LINE: One of the top hybrids tested. The X2 Hot is a very forgiving, versatile model that’s capable of more than competent, sometimes huge distance.
