Callaway X2 Hot Fairway Woods
Category: Game-Improvement Fairway Woods
WE TESTED: 3 (15°) and 5 (19°) with Aldila Tour Blue graphite shaft
KEY TECHNOLOGIES: A thinner, lighter face cup than in the X Hot increases ball speeds on off-center hits.
PLAYABILITY: Good out of the rough, off a short tee and everywhere in between; boring trajectory climbs fast without sacrificing any control; basic draws and fades are no problem with the X2 Hot.
ACCURACY/FORGIVENESS: Fire away—these sticks are just plain easy to hit well; stands out for point-and- shoot accuracy, with enough forgiveness to salvage all but your worst swings.
DISTANCE: A true bomber— can’t ask for much more; consistent yardages on any hits near the center of the face—it doesn’t require a perfect swing for stellar results; surprising carry on most mis-hits.
FEEL: Cushioned, compressed sensation at impact; the ball rockets off the face and shots feel like they’ll fly forever; enough feedback to confirm a well-struck effort.
LOOK: A low-key, low-profile appearance that’s easy to get used to; for many guys, the ideal head size—it’s comforting behind the ball without looking clumsy.
A few testers struggle to make solid contact in thicker grass; the shallow face presents a small risk of pop-ups off the tee or from fluffy lies; a minority of guys don’t care for the gray finish and accenting decals.
BOTTOM LINE: One of the top fairway-wood models tested. The X2 Hot is a straight-hitting, high-flying, all-around monster that can help a wide range of players.
