ClubTest 2014: Callaway Mack Daddy 2 Wedges
Callaway Mack Daddy 2 Wedges
WE TESTED: Standard grind in 52° (loft)/ 12° (bounce), 56°/14°, 60°/10°; “U” grind in 60°/10°; “C” grind in 60°/14°. All with the True Temper Dynamic Gold S300 steel shaft
KEY TECHNOLOGIES: 39 percent larger grooves than the club’s predecessor produce 25 percent more spin from the rough.
PLAYABILITY: One of the highest-rated models; the Mack Daddy 2 is great from all types of sand—fluffy to wet and firm; greenside rough and uneven fairway lies are a snap; can hit it low or high with relative ease.
DISTANCE CONTROL: Among the top clubs tested; very consistent on solid hits and relatively forgiving on misses; predictable results nearly every time, even from rough; it’s easy to hit high-spin shots that stop on a dime.
FEEL: A real strength—the club has a very assertive, aggressive sensation through impact but a soft, forged feel that’s never harsh, even on mis-hits; some testers have anointed this model Callaway’s best-feeling wedge yet.
LOOK: Classic and high-tech at the same time; testers definitely feel like a “player” when they line these up; aggressive face milling gives the impression that you’ll spin the heck out of the ball; testers like both the chrome finish and the darker slate finish.
Heavy head feel isn’t to everyone’s liking; a few traditionalists don’t like seeing the pronounced face-milling pattern; produces a slightly lower trajectory than some testers would prefer.
BOTTOM LINE: The Mack Daddy 2 is one of the top-rated models. It feels great and offers plenty of control and spin.
