ClubTest 2015: Bridgestone J15 Wedge

On the Range: Bridgestone J15 Wedge
ClubTesters talk about one of their favorite clubs of 2015, the Bridgestone J15 wedge.

Bridgestone J15 Wedge

Category: Wedges
Price: $120
WE TESTED:
50° loft/8° bounce, 52°/8°, 54°/10°, 56°/14°, 58°/8°, 60°/6° with True Temper Dynamic Gold Spinner steel shaft
KEY TECHNOLOGIES: The contoured heel is forged into the head rather than ground down, for consistent shaping.

PROS

PLAYABILITY: It makes a living in rough terrain; the grooved sole grind helps the head slide through sand or thick rough to pop the ball out and on line; lots of guys find the turf interaction close to perfect—a very fluid club with standout versatility.
DISTANCE CONTROL: The J15 really grabs the ball on full swings—even out of the rough, shots into the green bite; predictable spin and release offers better players a ton of fine-grain control on chips and pitches; tweener shots are easy to lock in; most guys could reach back and pull out a few extra yards when necessary.
FEEL: A winner all around—and for several guys it’s pure gold; a super-soft forging—it’s like the face is wrapped in flannel; not as heavy as others, though it’s stable—feels nimble, not blunt-force; notable feedback, but no big wobbles or vibrations; the agile head glides through the ground without digging a trench.
LOOK: A tester favorite—sleek, elegant and innovative; grooved section of the sole shows off its heel relief while blending into the overall design; both the brushed satin and matte black finishes look great.

CONS

Leave it for players who put in hours at the practice green—one of the most demanding wedges, with little forgiveness on full swings; curved leading edge and bounce profile can be intimidating on tight lies; a few guys prefer a heavier head.

BOTTOM LINE: The J15 is a tester favorite. It backs up its debonair design and refined feel with all-terrain precision. Best in the hands of a skilled, creative golfer.
